Mario Kart World's Mirror Mode Free Roam Unlocked via Mario 64 Easter Egg

by Ellie Jun 17,2025

Mario Kart World has surprised fans with a clever trick that lets players experience the game's open world in Mirror Mode — and it’s an homage to one of Nintendo’s most iconic platformers. Inspired by Super Mario 64’s legendary painting warps in Princess Peach’s Castle, this hidden method involves scaling the castle roof and diving through a stained glass window to enter a mirrored version of the game world.

Before attempting this trick, however, you must first unlock Mirror Mode in Grand Prix or Knockout Tour. To do so, complete all cups on 150cc and collect several P-Switches, Peach Medallions, and Question Panels during Free Roam sessions. Once Mirror Mode is unlocked, the secret becomes accessible.

To activate the hidden Mirror Mode in Free Roam, head to the central Princess Stadium course (you can fast travel there using the Y button from the world map). As you drive along the spiraling road, leap off toward the right side where Peach’s Castle comes into view. Aim to land on the large red rooftop beneath you, then maneuver your kart over to the main turret of the castle. There, you’ll find a grand stained-glass window featuring Princess Peach — reminiscent of the paintings in Super Mario 64.

Drive straight through the window and watch as the screen ripples like a classic Mario painting warp. In seconds, you’ll be transported into a fully mirrored version of Mario Kart World — even the world map flips to match. It’s a stylish nod to Nintendo’s history and a fun way to explore familiar terrain with a fresh twist.

Interestingly, while fans were discovering this clever feature, others noted that Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, was absent from Mario Kart World’s credits. While surprising to some, his absence may not be entirely unexpected given his recent reduced involvement in direct development roles at Nintendo.

Elsewhere, Japanese players have praised the game for its attention to detail — particularly when it comes to Cow, a fan-favorite character whose muddy rear end received a warm reception from local farmers. It seems Mario Kart World continues to impress with both gameplay depth and charming touches.
