Marvel Rivals Dev Faces Social Media Pressure, Announces Major Season 3 Changes

by Zachary Apr 17,2025

NetEase Games is making significant changes to the post-launch roadmap for Marvel Rivals, aiming to keep the momentum alive with its player base. The new strategy involves shortening seasons from three months to two and ensuring at least one new hero is introduced every month. This shift was hinted at in the latest Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, where they detailed the upcoming Season 2, set to launch on April 11 with the new Vanguard, Emma Frost. Mid-season will see the introduction of Ultron, though his class details will be shared closer to his release. These new heroes are set to bring fresh abilities and excitement to the game.

In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which doesn't have a set release date yet, NetEase plans to implement these shorter seasons without compromising their commitment to releasing a new hero every half-season. This means players won't have to wait as long between hero releases, starting from the hero following Ultron.

Guangyun Chen, the creative director of Marvel Rivals, shared in the Dev Vision video that the team has been reflecting on how to keep the game engaging since Season 1's launch. Social media feedback has added pressure to maintain the game's initial excitement. Chen emphasized the goal of fulfilling players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes, which involves introducing new game modes and a diverse roster of characters. NetEase is adjusting its systems to accommodate this increased content flow, with more details to be shared before Season 3 launches.

Just hours ago, NetEase unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, which will transition from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This shift will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with further information to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Marvel Rivals has been a massive success since its launch in December, attracting 10 million players in just three days. The game was released on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam alone, it saw 480,990 concurrent players at launch, with Season 1 in January peaking at 644,269 concurrent players, making it the 15th most-played game on the platform. Although player numbers have declined since then, Marvel Rivals remains a popular title on Steam. The upcoming Season 2 and the changes planned for Season 3 are expected to rejuvenate player interest.
