What Is Max Level/Rank in Assassin’s Creed Shadows? Level Cap Explained

by Eric Mar 31,2025

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* stands out as one of the most expansive entries in the franchise, boasting a comprehensive progression system that matches its grand scale. Here's a detailed look at the maximum levels in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* and how the level cap functions.

What Is the Max XP Level in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* has transformed the way progression is handled within the series. Although the game's skill acquisition is primarily tied to the innovative Knowledge Ranks system, there remains a traditional XP-based progression that's pivotal for unlocking higher-tier weapons, armor, and gear, as well as enhancing Naoe and Yasuke's base stats.

While reaching Level 35 is sufficient to explore all of the Japanese provinces in the game's vast map, dedicated players can continue their XP grind well beyond this point. Initially, Ubisoft suggested a Level Cap of 40 in their pre-launch progression deep dive. However, players can actually push their levels all the way to 60. There's also a strong possibility that this cap will be raised even further with the upcoming *Claws of Awaji* expansion for *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*.

In *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, the introduction of Knowledge Rank marks a significant evolution in the franchise's progression mechanics. Distinct from the XP leveling system, Knowledge Ranks are advanced by accumulating Knowledge Points through various in-game activities that emphasize mindfulness and training. As players ascend through the Knowledge Ranks, new skills become accessible to Naoe and Yasuke, though these must be unlocked using Mastery Points.

To unlock all available skills, players need to reach Knowledge Rank 6. However, this is not the end of the road for Knowledge Rank progression. Upon reaching this rank, Naoe and Yasuke gain access to an additional Knowledge tree, offering several passive skills that allow players to fine-tune their builds according to their preferred playstyle.

Is There a Cap for Mastery in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Mastery represents the third core element of progression in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, serving as the equivalent to skill points. These points are essential for unlocking new skills across the six Mastery trees available for each protagonist. Some skills demand more Mastery Points to unlock than others, adding depth to the progression system.

With a vast array of skills to unlock, players have numerous opportunities to earn Mastery Points through diverse in-game activities. Although there might theoretically be a limit to the number of Mastery Points one can accumulate, reaching this cap would require extensive engagement with the game. The *Claws of Awaji* expansion, set to launch later in 2025, is expected to introduce new methods for earning Mastery Points.

Does Assassin’s Creed Shadows Have Level Scaling?

In *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, each province in Japan is assigned a specific level. At the outset, the highest level requirement you'll encounter is for Kii, set at Level 35. As you advance through the game and increase your XP level, the difficulty of some regions will scale to match your progress.

However, there's a ceiling to how much the levels of enemies and the overall difficulty of provinces will scale once you reach Level 40 and beyond. From Level 42 onwards, the recommended level for each province remains two levels below your current XP level. This mechanism ensures that the game remains challenging and maintains a suitable combat pace in the endgame, while still rewarding players who invest significant time into the game.

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available now on PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.*
