Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet promises to offer players a significantly enhanced level of freedom, a notable shift from the studio's previous, more structured projects. Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed Elden Ring, the developers are set to introduce expansive open-world exploration mechanics. Journalist Ben Hanson has disclosed that the game will be set on a single, vast planet where players will delve into the enigma of a lost civilization and explore the intricacies of a new religion, which plays a pivotal role in the narrative. While it's still uncertain how closely the game will align with the traditional open-world genre, it's clear that the developers are steering away from their past linear game designs.
The Heretic Prophet marks the studio's inaugural venture where players will navigate the world solo, without the aid of companions or allies. As Neil Druckmann explains, the game aims to evoke a profound sense of isolation within an uncharted universe, while also deeply exploring themes of faith and religion. The storyline unfolds in an alternate future on the planet Sempiria, which has been isolated from the rest of the galaxy for more than 600 years. Here, players will follow the journey of bounty hunter Jordan Moon, who arrives on the planet as part of her contract.
Druckmann also highlights that the development of the game was influenced by iconic titles such as Half-Life 2 and Monkey Island. This suggests a move away from conventional narrative guidance, leaning instead towards a storytelling approach where players are tasked with piecing together the story's fragments themselves.
The game was unveiled at The Game Awards 2024 and, as of now, does not have a confirmed release date.
