Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing after spotting references to variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, only for those mentions to vanish shortly after. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation surrounding VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error," the company stated. When asked about potential VRR support for docked mode in a future firmware update, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."
This means that while the Switch 2 will offer VRR as an option when used in handheld mode, those connecting their console to a TV will not benefit from this feature at launch. The clarification follows a period of confusion, as the VRR mention was initially noticed and then quickly removed. The gradual disappearance of these mentions across various sites was meticulously tracked by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.
Although this news may disappoint those eager for VRR in TV mode right from the start, it's not necessarily the end of the road. Sony, for instance, rolled out VRR support to PS5 consoles via a post-launch update, suggesting that a similar update could eventually come to the Switch 2.
In other developments related to the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo recently announced a lineup of games set to receive free performance upgrades, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has reassured fans that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
