Shoji Meguro, who has been an integral part of Atlus since 1995, has contributed to the iconic soundtracks of the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series. In 2021, he transitioned into an indie game developer while still collaborating with Atlus on their music projects. His latest venture, Guns Undarkness, marks his first foray into a sci-fi stealth action JRPG, which will be published under Kodansha Game Creators Lab.

First unveiled at Indie Live Expo Winter 2021, Guns Undarkness successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2022, reaching its stretch goals and generating significant buzz. The upcoming Steam Next Fest demo will offer a taste of what's to come, with the full game set to enter Early Access later this year.

According to its Steam page, Guns Undarkness is a "turn-based tactical JRPG inspired by games like Metal Gear Solid and Persona." Set in the year 2045, the game presents a world on the brink of destruction, where players take on the role of a member of a private military company. Their mission is to navigate through perilous landscapes, uncover the secrets of the world, and ultimately save humanity.

The gameplay of Guns Undarkness is divided into two main aspects: stealth and battle. During stealth sections, players must maneuver carefully to avoid detection, gaining a strategic advantage if they can engage enemies without being noticed. Battles are turn-based, requiring players to issue commands and utilize a variety of firearms to overcome adversaries.

The demo at Steam Next Fest will feature approximately 20 minutes of gameplay, including a tutorial that covers basic controls, the battle system, weapons, and early-game strategies. Guns Undarkness is slated for an Early Access release in Spring 2025, offering around 10 hours of playtime on PC. While an exact release date has yet to be announced, the anticipation for this title continues to grow among fans of tactical and turn-based JRPGs.
