Pokémon TCG Pocket Players Amazed by Cards Featuring Game Boy Locations

by Mia May 02,2025

Players of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been captivated by its stunning card art for months, but a recent discovery has revealed that some of these cards hold hidden details connecting them to the classic Game Boy games. The excitement began over the weekend when Reddit user asch_win highlighted that the Spearow card features subtle landmarks. The Normal/Flying type Pokémon is depicted amidst grass, a fence, trees, and two distinctive buildings. Notably, the purple and yellow building in the background is identified as the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Just to the left of Celadon City lies Route 16, known for its fenced-in grassy area where Spearow can be encountered.

It's evident that Creatures Inc. and DeNA, the developers behind Pokémon TCG Pocket, have purposefully crafted these cards to pay homage to the iconic games that propelled Pokémon to its current status as a global phenomenon. The fun doesn't end with Spearow; Reddit user jteede uncovered further connections to early titles, such as a full-art Diglett card set near Vermillion City, a Haunter card positioned by the eerie Lavender Town tower, and more. Asch_win also used a magnifying glass to inspect some Supporter cards, uncovering references to specific locations from Pokémon's storied past.

While most card illustrations depict Pokémon in enchanting, seemingly loreless environments, some cards, like a particular Pikachu variant, are recognizable as collectible cards in the real world. Others are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket, where players are uncovering these cleverly concealed Easter Eggs. The community has been actively dissecting other cards to uncover more references, with notable finds including the S.S. Anne cruise liner subtly featured on a Gyarados full art card and a set of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that together narrate a story near FireRed and LeafGreen's seaside Snorlax.

Since its release for mobile gaming enthusiasts in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has expanded with one additional booster set titled Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs available. Future releases are anticipated, with additional cards being introduced through Wonder Pick Events and other updates. As Creatures and DeNA continue to enrich the game with cards from various generations, players are encouraged to remain vigilant for more nostalgic references.

In the meantime, you can explore the current Wonder Pick event, spotlighting Charmander and Squirtle. Also, delve into why the developers are being secretive about whether pack choice impacts gameplay.
