Prepare Your Sanctuary: Board Up Windows for Ultimate Security in Project Zomboid

by Audrey Feb 02,2025

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid requires more than just finding a suitable location; it demands robust defenses. One fundamental method is barricading windows, a simple yet effective strategy to keep the undead at bay. This guide details how to achieve this.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To board up a window, you'll need a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these essential supplies, right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Locating the Necessary Supplies

Hammers and nails are typically found in locations where you'd expect to find them in real life: toolboxes, garages, sheds, closets, and similar areas. Wooden planks are commonly found on construction sites, or you can salvage them by dismantling wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.) in a pinch. Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items directly.

Enhanced Security and Removal

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access compared to unprotected windows. The more planks you add, the more time it takes for zombies to breach the barrier. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to do so.

Limitations and Alternatives

Larger furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) are ineffective as window barriers; characters and zombies will simply pass through them. While these items are useless for defense, knowing how to move furniture can be useful for interior design.

Advanced Barricades

For superior protection, consider metal bars or sheets. However, this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
