The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz with its new Joy-Con controllers, which appear to include mouse support, as hinted by a recent patent filing. Dive into the details about the innovative features of the Switch 2's Joy-Con and don't miss the schedule for the upcoming Nintendo Direct.

The excitement around the Nintendo Switch 2 has escalated with the revelation of new features in its Joy-Con controllers, notably the inclusion of mouse support. A patent published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on February 6, 2025, sheds light on this development. The patent, filed by Nintendo, details the functionalities of the Switch 2's Joy-Con, emphasizing its ability to mimic mouse operations.
This feature was first hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showcased the controller being dragged across a surface, suggesting its mouse-like capabilities. Despite Nintendo's usual silence on upcoming console specifics, this patent has all but confirmed the rumors surrounding the Joy-Con's new function.
The Joy-Con for the Switch 2 retains the familiar design of detachable controllers from the original Nintendo Switch. The standout addition, as per the patent, is the ability of the Joy-Con to function as a mouse. The patent explains, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."
In addition to the mouse functionality, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new docking station capable of charging two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A new attachment that magnetically connects the Joy-Con to the console, complete with a wrist strap, echoes the design of the original Switch's Joy-Con.
The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These can be combined into a standard controller using a separate attachment.
It's important to note that while the patent details these innovative features, they may not all make it into the final product, as Nintendo has yet to make any official announcements regarding the Switch 2's Joy-Con or other related accessories.
Nintendo of America took to Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025, to announce the schedule for the upcoming Nintendo Direct, which will delve into details about the Switch 2. Mark your calendars for April 2, 2025, when the Direct will air at 6 AM PT and 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo social media platforms.
The Nintendo Switch 2 trailer has already confirmed a 2025 release, though specific dates are still under wraps. For more updates and information on the console, be sure to check out our dedicated Switch 2 page.
