The failure of the TV adaptation of Halo hasn't deterred Microsoft from exploring further adaptations of its video game franchises. Phil Spencer, Microsoft's gaming chief, confirmed to Variety that fans can anticipate more adaptations in the future. This statement comes as Microsoft prepares for the launch of "A Minecraft Movie," a big-screen adaptation of the popular sandbox game Minecraft, starring Jack Black. High expectations surround this film, and its success could pave the way for sequels.
Microsoft's recent endeavors in adapting video games for the screen include the highly successful "Fallout" series on Prime Video, which is already set for a second season. However, the TV adaptation of Halo, a flagship Xbox game, did not fare well and was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception.
Despite the setback with Halo, Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning and gaining confidence in this domain. "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," he told Variety. He acknowledged that while some adaptations might miss the mark, the overall experience is building a foundation for future projects. "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’"
As for potential future adaptations, speculation abounds. Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated series based on Gears of War in 2022, although updates have been scarce, aside from Dave Bautista's interest in playing Marcus Fenix. Given the success of Fallout, there's speculation about a possible Elder Scrolls or Skyrim series on Prime Video. However, with Amazon's existing fantasy offerings like The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, this might be less likely.
Sony's success with the Gran Turismo movie suggests that Microsoft might consider a Forza Horizon adaptation. With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft could explore adaptations of Call of Duty or revisit a Warcraft project. Jason Schreier's book, "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment," revealed that Netflix had been developing series for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo, which were later abandoned. Microsoft's involvement could potentially revive these projects.
On a lighter note, Microsoft now owns Crash Bandicoot, which could be ripe for an animated adaptation, especially following the success of Mario and Sonic movies. The upcoming Fable reboot in 2026 might also be a candidate for an adaptation. There's even speculation about Microsoft giving Halo another shot, this time as a big-budget movie.
Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further along in this space. Sony has enjoyed success with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and is planning a second season for Twisted Metal. Sony has also announced a Helldivers 2 movie, a film adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, and an anime based on Ghost of Tsushima, with the God of War TV show already set for two seasons.
Nintendo boasts the most successful video game adaptation to date with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is set for a sequel, and a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is in the works.
