In the early stages of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy faces a tragic assassination. After piecing together the mystery of their own murder, the identity of the killer is revealed to be Ygwulf. As a member of the Paradisan Rebels, who fiercely resist Aedyr's presence in the region, Ygwulf sees the Envoy as a prime target. Upon tracking him down to his underground hideout, players must navigate through numerous enemies and complete platforming challenges, making sure to bring ample Health Potions and the best gear available.
As you explore the dungeon, you may uncover documents that shed light on Ygwulf's true intentions and his growing remorse. Initially driven by a misguided belief that the Gods mandated the Envoy's death, Ygwulf's perspective shifts upon self-realization. Even without these documents, he expresses his regret and readiness to face justice when you confront him at the quest's end.
Opting for Ygwulf to turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote is the least favorable choice. This path leads him to a grim fate under Inquisitor Lödwyn's brutal judgment, resulting in a painful death. Moreover, this option yields fewer rewards compared to sparing him or defeating him in combat. If you choose to spare Ygwulf, he offers 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra as a token of gratitude. Although these resources are modest, they can be helpful. However, sparing him does not change his ultimate fate; he will still meet his demise later in the story.
Given that Ygwulf's destiny is sealed regardless of your choice, opting to attack him during your confrontation is the most beneficial decision. This choice triggers a boss fight, providing valuable practice for future encounters in *Avowed*. Additionally, defeating Ygwulf grants you the best loot available from this scenario.
By defeating Ygwulf, you can loot his body to obtain currency, Adra, and his unique Blackwing armor set. Not only does this armor look impressive, but it also offers significant advantages in stealth, with a +30% damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% movement speed increase when crouching, aiding in evasion and strategic positioning.
Despite Ygwulf's early introduction in the game, his fate subtly influences *Avowed*'s ending. After the final gameplay section, the narrative and art reflect the impact of your decisions across the Living Lands. No matter your efforts to unify and bring peace to the region, Ygwulf's death will always occur, fueling the radicalization of the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring their continued violent resistance post-credits.
