Atomfall Profits Soar at Launch, Sequel in Discussion

by Claire May 25,2025

Atomfall, the hit British survival game developed by Rebellion, has proven to be a smashing success right out of the gate. Launched on March 27, 2025, across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, the game became "immediately profitable" despite a significant portion of its 2 million players accessing it through Xbox Game Pass, rather than purchasing it outright. Rebellion has not disclosed specific sales figures but proudly announced that Atomfall marked the studio's biggest launch in terms of player numbers, a feat undoubtedly bolstered by the Game Pass audience.

In a conversation with The Game Business, Rebellion confirmed that Atomfall swiftly recouped its development costs. The studio is now exploring opportunities for sequels or spin-offs, while continuing to support the game with post-launch content and DLC.

Jason Kingsley, the head of Rebellion, shared in an earlier interview with GamesIndustry.biz that Atomfall's inclusion in Game Pass did not cannibalize sales. Instead, he emphasized the disproportionate benefits gained from the platform. "What you gain from that cost is disproportionate," Kingsley noted, pointing out that Microsoft ensures a guaranteed income level to mitigate risks for developers.

Moreover, the exposure provided by Game Pass significantly aids in spreading the word about the game. Kingsley explained, "With Game Pass, you can get people to try it, then as a result of those people trying it, they like it, and they then tell their mates on social media, 'I found this game on Game Pass, I really enjoyed it, you should have a go.' And then some of them are on Game Pass, and will play it. But some of them aren't on Game Pass, and will also want to be part of that conversation. So, they'll go and buy it."

While Microsoft keeps the specifics of its business deals confidential, it's clear that Atomfall's success has been mutually beneficial for both Rebellion and Microsoft, attracting more subscribers to the Game Pass service. The last publicly released subscriber count for Xbox Game Pass was 34 million users as of February 2024.

IGN's review of Atomfall praised it as "a gripping survival-action adventure that takes some of the best elements of Fallout and Elden Ring, and synthesises them into its own fresh mutation."
