Avowed: A Deep Dive into Complex Gameplay and Multiple Endings

Navigating Political Intrigue in the Living Lands

Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed promises players a rich, multifaceted experience where every choice, big or small, significantly impacts the overall narrative. Game director Carrie Patel emphasizes the game's focus on player agency and expression.

"It's about providing constant opportunities for players to express themselves and explore their character's alignment," Patel explains. "The game encourages players to be mindful of their experience, asking themselves: 'When am I engaged? When am I curious? When does my interest wane? What keeps me invested?'"

The outcomes in Avowed are directly tied to exploration and player choices within the intricate world of Eora, specifically in the politically charged Living Lands. "I've really enjoyed weaving together the narratives that connect these two worlds," Patel adds.

Avowed's Impactful Choices Shape the Entire Game

Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Giving players depth to explore—that's what makes it meaningful roleplay," Patel notes. "It's about defining who you want to be in this world and how the game's situations allow you to express that."

Beyond the robust RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat incorporating magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapon combinations you choose dramatically alter each playthrough," Patel confirms.

Furthermore, Patel confirmed to IGN that the game boasts numerous endings, with a multitude of variations. "We have double-digit ending slides, and many different combinations are possible," she reveals. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encounter and your actions within it."
