Addressing player feedback regarding campaign completion rates in Civ VI, Creative Director Ed Beach introduced a groundbreaking new mechanic: "Ages." In a PC Gamer interview, Beach explained that Civ VII's campaign is structured into three distinct Ages – Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern – allowing players to transition between historically linked civilizations as each Age concludes.

The transitions aren't random; they reflect real-world historical and geographical connections. For instance, the Roman Empire might seamlessly transition to the French Empire, possibly with the Norman Empire bridging the gap.
