"Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake Set for Imminent Reveal and Release"

by Henry Apr 21,2025

Rumors are swirling around the gaming community as Bethesda is reportedly gearing up to announce a much-anticipated remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. According to insider NatetheHate, who previously accurately predicted the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, the reveal could happen as soon as this month or next month. This news has been backed up by VGC, adding credibility to the buzz. As for the release, NatetheHate suggests a window before June, while VGC hints at a possible launch as early as April.

Adding fuel to the fire, in January, Mp1st stumbled upon details of the Oblivion remake, which were reportedly leaked by a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio. When IGN reached out to Microsoft for a comment, they remained tight-lipped. According to Mp1st, Virtuos has utilized Unreal Engine 5 to completely overhaul Bethesda's beloved open-world RPG, suggesting a significant transformation rather than a simple remaster. Alleged gameplay changes include modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the user interface (HUD).

The changes to the gameplay mechanics are said to draw inspiration from action games and Soulslikes. Blocking has been revamped to be more engaging and less "boring" and "frustrating." Sneak icons are now highlighted, and the damage calculation has been reworked. The difficulty in triggering a knockdown from depleted Stamina has increased, and the HUD has been redesigned for better clarity. Hit reactions have been introduced to enhance gameplay response, and Archery has been modernized for both first and third-person views.

The whispers of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023, when documents from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial over the Activision Blizzard acquisition were made public. These documents outlined a slate of unannounced Bethesda games planned for release in the coming years. Compiled in July 2020, before Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, the list included an Oblivion Remaster slated for the 2022 financial year, alongside other titles like an Indiana Jones game.

However, the list also mentioned several other projects, many of which have been delayed or canceled. For instance, Doom Year Zero has evolved into Doom: The Dark Ages, set to launch in May, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle didn't see the light of day until December 2024. The Elder Scrolls 6, initially planned for the 2024 financial year, remains far from release.

The term "remaster" used in the Microsoft document for Oblivion suggests a less ambitious project than what is now rumored to be a full-blown remake. It's possible that the scope of the project expanded over time, leading to the current speculation about a comprehensive remake. We'll have to wait for Bethesda's official announcement to confirm these details.

As for the platforms, with Microsoft now embracing multiplatform releases and the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, the Oblivion remake might not be limited to just PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. If the Switch 2 launches around June, there's a chance that Oblivion could be part of its launch lineup, opening its gates to a broader audience.
