Devil May Cry Remake Will Not Be Made Like 24 Years Ago

The trend of remaking classic games has been embraced by legendary developers, resulting in acclaimed remakes such as Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill 2, and Resident Evil 4. Now, the original Devil May Cry (DMC) may join this prestigious list, as its director, Hideki Kamiya, has voiced his interest in a DMC remake.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel on May 8, Kamiya engaged with fans, discussing remakes and sequels. When posed with the question about his ideas for a DMC remake, he enthusiastically responded, "A remake like that, well, I would like to do that."

First Released 2001

Originally conceived as Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry was released in 2001 after diverging significantly from its initial concept, leading Capcom to launch it as a separate entity.

Reflecting on the game nearly 25 years later, Kamiya revealed the personal inspiration behind DMC. In 2000, after experiencing a heartbreaking breakup, he channeled his emotional turmoil into the creation of this game.

Kamiya admits he rarely revisits his own games post-release, and DMC is no different. Yet, when he occasionally encounters gameplay clips, he recognizes the game's age and its vintage design. Should he embark on a remake, Kamiya's approach would be to build it from scratch, leveraging modern technology and contemporary game design principles.

At present, the idea remains a distant thought for him, as he only fleshes out concepts when projects are confirmed. However, if the opportunity arises, he confidently states, "But if the time comes— I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do." Beyond DMC, Kamiya has also shown interest in remaking Viewtiful Joe. With these insights, fans of Kamiya's work are eagerly anticipating potential remakes of these cherished titles in the future.
