"Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story"

by Ellie May 07,2025

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The creative team behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the film's most humorous scenes drew inspiration from the iconic The NeverEnding Story. In a standout moment of physical comedy, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation, forced to ride on Jason Momoa's Garrett due to a shortage of Elytra wings, which are only available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's Henry. This scene, filled with comedic antics as Steve scrambles to avoid a perilous fall, was more than just a gag.

Play"We definitely wanted a Falkor moment from The Neverending Story that was both majestic and beautiful, but also one that goes south pretty quickly," explained A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious during the breaks between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on top of Jason in this complex rig, and he started singing the theme from The NeverEnding Story, treating Jason like he was Falkor."

This amusing reference is even more poignant because Jack Black previously portrayed Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, the scene was not only fun but also a chance to contribute creatively.

"I got to help write that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa said with a chuckle. "Inspired by Top Gun: Maverick, I wanted to add a stunt where I could hit the brakes and have Jack slide off, then quickly switch places. We were brainstorming this at the hotel, and it turned out to be a phenomenal addition to the film."

Jack Black reflected on the scene's various iterations, saying, "I'm not sure if our most daring version made the final cut; it could have been rated R. But in the end, we opted for a family-friendly approach."

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa exclaimed. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
