Nintendo Switch 2: Some Game Cards to Feature Download Keys Only

by Allison May 05,2025

Nintendo has announced an innovative change with its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch in June 2025. The company revealed that the new Switch 2 game cards will not always contain the actual game data; instead, some will only include a key for a game download. This update was detailed in a customer support post following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation earlier today.

According to the post, physical Switch games will continue to be available just as they have been for the past eight years. However, consumers should be aware of the new game-key cards. These cards, when inserted into the Switch 2, will prompt a game download rather than directly playing from the card itself. The packaging for these game-key cards will feature a clear label on the front, ensuring buyers are informed before making a purchase.

The introduction of game-key cards has sparked discussion among fans of physical gaming. Many are concerned about the shift from traditional plug-and-play cartridges to what some see as mere key holders. However, not all game boxes for the Switch 2 feature the game-key card disclaimer. For instance, titles like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster do, while Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not.

It appears that the game-key card approach might be reserved for larger games that could benefit from a digital download strategy, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will ship with a full 64 GB game card on the Switch 2’s launch day.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo highlighted the advanced technology behind the new red game cards, which boast faster data reading speeds than those of the original Switch. This emphasis on enhanced performance suggests that not all Switch 2 game cards will be mere key holders. Nintendo has previously used a hybrid approach with games like LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch, which required additional downloads alongside the physical card.

As the launch date of June 5, 2025, approaches, it remains to be seen how prevalent game-key cards will become. For a comprehensive overview of all the announcements from today’s Direct, click here. To delve deeper into the new technology features of the Nintendo Switch 2, click here.
