Nintendo Teases New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'

by Aurora May 04,2025

Nintendo has been dropping tantalizing hints that a new 3D Mario game could be just around the corner, but fans will need to keep their patience in check a bit longer. In a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to the growing clamor for a new mainline Mario title. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, his words suggest that fans might not have to wait too long to get more details.

"Stay tuned," Bowser advised. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."

Although Bowser's remarks fall short of a definitive announcement, they offer a glimmer of hope for those disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo unveiled its latest hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased exciting titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World. However, a traditional 3D Mario platformer was conspicuously missing from the lineup.

It's been nearly eight years since the last flagship Mario title, Super Mario Odyssey, debuted in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch's launch. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza may tide fans over in the meantime, it's not the Super Mario Odyssey 2 that many were hoping for. Given Mario's integral role in Nintendo's extensive catalog, as Bowser pointed out, it would be surprising if a new 3D Mario game didn't surface in the near future.

As of now, a new mainline Mario adventure remains unannounced. While waiting for more updates, you can explore Nintendo's updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console's launch on June 5, 2025.
