Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket has finally rolled out its much-anticipated trading feature today, but player reception has been worse than expected—despite initial criticism when developer Creatures Inc. first explained the mechanics last week.
Fans have flocked to social media to express frustration with the trading system, calling it overly restrictive and bogged down by requirements. While some restrictions were disclosed last week, the full extent of item consumption—mandatory for every trade—only became clear upon launch.
Unlike features like Wonder Pick or opening booster packs, trading demands two separate resources. The first, Trade Stamina, functions similarly to other mechanics—replenishing over time or purchasable with Poké Gold (real money). The second, however, has sparked uproar.

The real controversy lies in Trade Tokens, required for any card rated 3 Diamonds or higher. Trading a 3 Diamond card costs 120 tokens, a 1 Star card demands 400, and a 4 Diamond (e.g., ex Pokémon) requires 500. These tokens aren’t earned—they’re acquired by dismantling cards: sacrificing a 3 Diamond card nets just 25 tokens, while a Crown rarity card yields 1,500. Lower-tier cards, though token-free to trade, hold no conversion value.
This system forces players to liquidate multiple high-value cards for a single trade—five ex Pokémon just to trade one, for example. Even rarer Crown cards, which take months to obtain, only cover three ex trades. Even dismantling premium 3 Star immersive art cards—a major selling point for the game—falls short of trading a 1 Star or 4 Diamond card.

"This trading update is a slap in the face," wrote Reddit user hurtbowler in a viral post with 1,000+ upvotes, vowing to quit spending. "The greed is staggering. They should remove 'Trading' from the title—it’s false advertising." Others called the system "toxic" and "absurd," noting that converting cards into tokens takes 15 seconds each, adding unnecessary friction.
One commenter summed it up: "Burning two immersive cards to trade one ex is ridiculous. I get deterring bots, but this punishes legit players." Another joked, "Rename it Pokémon Card Game Pocket—trading clearly isn’t the goal."
what a joke of a trading system

Critics argue the system prioritizes profit over playability. Pokémon TCG Pocket reportedly earned $200 million in its first month—before trading existed. Blocking trades for 2 Star+ cards ensures players keep spending on random packs; one collector reportedly paid $1,500 to complete the first set alone.
Reddit user ACNL blasted the Token economy: "It’s predatory. No alternate ways to earn tokens? Forced to hoard duplicates? This isn’t sustainable—it’s a pack-selling scheme."
Finally Trade is here.... wait What?

Creatures Inc. has remained silent amid the backlash, despite addressing initial concerns last week with promises to "evolve the feature based on feedback." Their radio silence contrasts with earlier engagement, leaving players skeptical. IGN has reached out for comment on potential changes.
Some suggest fixes—like rewarding Trade Tokens via missions—but precedent favors monetizable items like Trade Stamina. With the Diamond/Pearl update launching soon, featuring Dialga and Palkia, the timing of this debacle couldn’t be worse for the $200M-hit game.
