Kim MacAskill, a former narrative director at PlayStation, has launched a petition urging the creators of the Until Dawn movie to properly credit the game's original writers. As highlighted by Eurogamer, MacAskill's petition seeks to encourage Sony to set a new standard in crediting game developers in transmedia projects. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing the hard work and creativity of the game's developers, who she believes deserve acknowledgment for their contributions to this iconic title.
In her petition, MacAskill expresses frustration over the current crediting practices, noting that while the movie credits the film's director and writers, it only vaguely references the game with a "based on the Sony game" tag. She argues that this does not give due credit to the developers who "spent years breaking their brains to make something incredible." She further elaborates on her LinkedIn post, drawing comparisons to HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, where both the studio and key creatives like Neil Druckmann received proper recognition.
MacAskill also shares her personal experience, revealing that Sony executives informed her that she would never receive credit for the IP she created while employed by them, citing her salaried status as the reason for no royalties, control, ownership, or acknowledgment. She challenges Sony's stance, questioning the fairness and consistency of their crediting policies across different projects.
The petition calls for Sony to revise their approach to IP crediting in transmedia adaptations, suggesting that an executive producer credit or similar acknowledgment would be fitting for the creators. MacAskill believes this change would not only honor the creators but also set a precedent that could inspire future generations of game developers and ensure the integrity of the industry.
In other news, it appears that Until Dawn Remastered will be part of the PlayStation Plus games for May 2025, possibly as a promotional move ahead of the Until Dawn movie release. However, the movie itself received mixed reviews, with IGN's review giving it a 5/10 and describing it as "more disappointing than deadly," suggesting it failed to capture the horror essence of the original game.
