Excitement is building for the release of Mario Kart World, a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive set to launch alongside the new console on June 5. This open-world racing game offers an expansive playground filled with characters, vehicles, and regions from the Mushroom Kingdom, allowing players to explore and race in a free-wheeling manner. You can now preorder the game from various retailers, including Walmart.

Mario Kart World
Unlike many modern video games that come in various editions, Mario Kart World is available in a single version. You can purchase it standalone for $79.99 or opt for the bundle with the Nintendo Switch 2 console for $499.99.

Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle
By choosing the Switch 2 bundle that includes Super Mario Kart World, you save $30 compared to buying the console and game separately. Keep in mind that the bundle comes with a digital copy of the game, so you won't receive a physical cartridge or game box. If having a physical copy is a priority for you, consider spending the extra $30 for the standalone game.
When purchased by itself, Mario Kart World is priced at $79.99, which is $10 more than the standard price for AAA titles on PlayStation and Xbox this generation. While I'm not thrilled about the price increase between console generations, I understand that game development costs have risen significantly. Hopefully, the scale and quality of Mario Kart World justify the higher price tag.
Mario Kart World is poised to be the most expansive Mario Kart game to date, featuring an open-world environment similar to the Forza Horizon series. In Grand Prix mode, you can seamlessly transition from one race track to another after completing a race. The tracks are dynamically affected by weather conditions and time of day, impacting visibility and traction. Players can also venture off the designated tracks and explore "virtually everywhere," as stated by Nintendo. Each race supports up to 24 drivers, surpassing the participant count of any previous Mario Kart game.
A new mode called Knockout Tour challenges players to race across the open world from one corner to another, navigating through checkpoints with specific placement requirements. Falling behind these requirements results in elimination from the race. For a more relaxed experience, Free Roam mode allows players to drive anywhere in the world, team up with friends, and capture photos along the way.
More details about Mario Kart World will be revealed during the Nintendo Direct on April 17. In the meantime, check out our hands-on preview for more insights.
