"Minecraft Guide: Obtaining Armadillo Scutes"

by Ava May 13,2025

Introduced in the *Minecraft* 1.20.5 "Armored Paws" update, the Armadillo is a passive mob found in various warm biomes. This creature, adorned with protective "Scutes," plays a crucial role in crafting Wolf Armor, a new feature designed to protect your canine companions. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to obtain Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*.

How to Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft:

Armadillos thrive in warm environments and typically appear in groups of two or three. When approached hastily, they'll roll into a defensive ball, so it's essential to move slowly and carefully to prevent them from tucking and rolling.

You can find Armadillos in the following biomes:

  • Badlands
  • Eroded Badlands
  • Savanna
  • Savanna Plateau
  • Windswept Savanna
  • Wooded Badlands

Once you've located an Armadillo, you have two methods to collect their Scutes:

1. Watch and Wait:

Similar to how Chickens drop Eggs, Armadillos will naturally shed a Scute every 5-10 minutes. This passive method doesn't require any tools or effort, making it an easy choice. However, it's a slow process, especially if you need enough Scutes to craft multiple sets of Wolf Armor.

2. Brushing:

The most popular method for obtaining Scutes involves using a Brush, a tool typically used for investigating suspicious sand or gravel. Brushing an Armadillo gently will yield one Scute per use.

In the Java Edition of *Minecraft*, an unenchanted Brush with full durability can be used four times on an Armadillo before breaking, while in Bedrock Edition, it lasts for five uses. You can repair two damaged Brushes by combining them, and if they're enchanted, you can merge them at an Anvil to retain both enchantments.

A Brush can be enchanted with Unbreaking, Mending, and Curse of Vanishing, enhancing its durability and utility.

To craft a Brush, you'll need a Feather, a Copper Ingot, and a Stick, arranged vertically in the center column of the Crafting Table.

Approach the Armadillos slowly to avoid triggering their defensive roll, then use the Brush to collect Scutes. With enough Brushes, you can gather a substantial number of Scutes for crafting Wolf Armor.

Minecraft Armadillo Scutes

Once you've collected the required six Scutes, you can craft a set of Wolf Armor at a Crafting Table.

These are the current methods for obtaining and utilizing Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*. Whether you choose to wait patiently or use the Brush, you'll be well on your way to protecting your Wolves with sturdy armor.
