New Mini Controller Enables Portrait Mode Gaming!

If you're a gamer, you've likely encountered the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone. A modder named Max Kern has attempted to address this issue with his innovative Tate mode mini controller, but does it truly resolve the problem?

Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, similar to those used with the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, classic vertical shooters and retro games often require holding your phone in portrait mode, much like scrolling through Instagram.

Max Kern's solution is a compact USB-C gamepad tailored for portrait-mode gaming, known as Tate mode. This controller connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.

Constructed with a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, the Tate Mode mini controller features a 3D-printed case and buttons, courtesy of JLCPCB. If you're interested in building one yourself, Max provides a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

The controller employs the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices. Its compact design offers impressive versatility.

However, there are some concerns. The setup may strain the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. This could lead to bending the connector over time, necessitating careful handling of both the phone and controller.

On Reddit, opinions are divided. While some users admire the creativity, others worry about potential hand cramps and overall comfort. It's important to note that this is more of a DIY project than a commercial product. Max has generously shared all necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and GitHub.

What are your thoughts on this tiny gamepad? We'd love to hear your comments!
