Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Pre-Order Delay Hits Canada Too

by Skylar May 07,2025

Gamers around the world let out a collective groan last week when the pre-order date for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 shifted from April 9 to an uncertain "who knows when?" This change came in the wake of new import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which caused financial markets to spiral. The ripple effect of this decision has crossed borders, impacting pre-orders in Canada as well. Nintendo Canada has confirmed that pre-orders north of the border are also delayed, dashing hopes of securing a console through a Winnipeg-based cousin.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.," stated Nintendo of Canada in a communication to the Canadian tech site MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

This statement echoes the one given to IGN by Nintendo of America on April 4, although the Canadian version omits specific mention of the new tariffs.

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, as Nintendo assesses the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update the timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged.

Despite the original pre-order date being tomorrow, there's still no clarity on when gamers can start refreshing their browsers and verifying their credit card details, leaving them in a state of limbo and worried about potential price hikes beyond the initially announced $449.99.

In other parts of the world, pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 have already gone live in the UK, with smaller retailers such as EE, GAME, and Smyths quickly selling out. Scalpers have already begun listing pre-orders on eBay for £500 ($639) or more, significantly higher than the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
