"OutRun: Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney Surprise Movie Adaptation Revealed"

by Alexis May 13,2025

Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to make a thrilling leap to the big screen, with none other than Michael Bay at the helm. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Universal Pictures has enlisted the Transformers director to both direct and produce this exciting adaptation. Joining him is the talented Sydney Sweeney, who is also on board as a producer. The screenplay will be penned by Jayson Rothwell, though plot details remain under wraps for now, and no release date has been set.

From the Sega camp, Toru Nakahara, a key figure behind the successful Sonic movies, will serve as a producer. Additionally, Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project, ensuring it stays true to the game's legacy.

OutRun, first launched in 1986, was a groundbreaking arcade driving game created by the legendary Sega developer Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen multiple versions and ports, with a notable sequel in 2003. While the game has been relatively quiet in recent times, the most recent iteration was OutRun Online Arcade, released by Sumo Digital in 2009.

Sega has been actively exploring its rich catalog for new projects, with upcoming games including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi. Furthermore, Sega has successfully ventured into adaptations, with the Sonic movies achieving significant popularity and a Like a Dragon: Yakuza series premiering on Amazon last year. The demand for video game adaptations is high, as seen with the blockbuster success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recent release of A Minecraft Movie.

As for the OutRun film, fans might expect a high-octane, Fast & Furious-style driving and action spectacle, given Michael Bay's signature style and Sydney Sweeney's involvement. This adaptation promises to bring the adrenaline-pumping excitement of the classic game to a new audience on the silver screen.
