Layden Advises Sony on PS6 Risks

Former PlayStation Executive Discusses Future of Disc-Based Gaming

Shawn Layden, former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, believes PlayStation couldn't successfully launch a disc-less PlayStation 6 console. In his interview with Kiwi Talkz, Layden contrasted Xbox's digital-first approach with PlayStation's broader global obligations.

The Digital Dilemma for PlayStation

"PlayStation's massive worldwide reach creates different challenges than Xbox faces," Layden explained. "While Xbox has succeeded with digital in English-speaking markets, PlayStation must consider regions with unreliable internet access."

Layden emphasized PlayStation's responsibility to diverse global markets, particularly areas with connectivity limitations. "Can players in rural Italy or on military bases reliably access digital-only content? These are real concerns when you operate in 170+ countries."

Physical Media's Declining Role

The industry veteran acknowledged changing trends: "Even current physical releases often require internet activation. We're seeing publishers treat discs more as license keys than complete products."

Examples like Assassin's Creed Shadows and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor demonstrate this shift - requiring online connectivity despite physical releases.

Consumer Choice Remains Key

Current PlayStation strategy maintains flexibility: "Sony's approach with the PS5 digital edition and optional disc drive shows their cautious transition," Layden noted. "They're clearly assessing when the tipping point comes to potentially abandon physical media."

With subscription services like PlayStation Plus gaining prominence, Layden predicts continued industry movement toward digital distribution, but cautions: "For PlayStation specifically, complete phase-out likely requires more time due to their unique market position."
