Simu Liu Advocates for Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation

by Ellie May 08,2025

Fans of the acclaimed 2012 video game Sleeping Dogs were disheartened earlier this month when the much-anticipated film adaptation was officially confirmed to be canceled. However, hope has been rekindled thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu, who recently expressed his interest in reviving the project. As reported by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for an adaptation on X/Twitter, stating, "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."

The film adaptation was initially announced in 2017, with action star Donnie Yen set to take the lead role. Despite initial excitement, the project vanished from the public eye a year later. Just a few weeks ago, Yen himself confirmed the project's cancellation, expressing his disappointment and the significant personal investment he had made into it. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen lamented. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"

With the cancellation seeming final, the revival of interest from Simu Liu, star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has sparked new hope among fans. Liu's involvement remains uncertain, as it is yet to be seen whether he will successfully secure the rights or manage to get the film project underway.

Sleeping Dogs, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows the gripping tale of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game was met with critical acclaim, scoring an impressive 8/10 from IGN. Despite its success, no sequels were produced, leaving fans eager for more content in this thrilling universe.
