Take-Two Boss Says 'Legacy' Civilization Audience Will Eventually Come Around on Civilization 7 Amid 'Mixed' Steam User Reviews

by Nicholas Feb 20,2025

Civilization 7's rocky launch hasn't deterred Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, who remains confident that dedicated fans will eventually embrace the game. Despite a "mixed" Steam user review rating, Zelnick points to a Metacritic score of 81 and numerous reviews exceeding 90 as evidence of the game's overall quality. He acknowledges criticism, particularly concerning the user interface (UI) and a perceived lack of features, but emphasizes that Firaxis is actively addressing these concerns with planned UI improvements, the addition of multiplayer teams, and expanded map variety.

The initial negative feedback, Zelnick suggests, stems from the significant changes implemented in Civ 7, including the innovative three-age campaign structure with simultaneous Age Transitions. This system, unprecedented in previous Civilization titles, involves selecting a new civilization, retaining legacies, and witnessing world evolution at each transition. While acknowledging the need for immediate improvements to address negative Steam reviews—crucial for the game's visibility and success on the platform—Zelnick believes the game's core mechanics will ultimately win over long-time players.

The current negative sentiment, particularly evident in early access reviews, focuses on UI issues and a feeling that the game launched incomplete. However, Zelnick's confidence rests on the belief that the core gameplay, including the novel Age Transition system, will ultimately prove compelling to the established Civilization player base. The immediate challenge for Firaxis is to address the negative Steam reviews and improve the game's overall perception.
