Fans are expressing frustration with the high costs of skins in Black Ops 6, especially following the upcoming crossover with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dive in to understand why some fans are pushing back against Activision’s monetization strategy!
The latest crossover event in Black Ops 6, featuring the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) as part of its Season 2 Reloaded, has left many fans feeling let down due to the steep prices for the skins. Each turtle—Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello—comes with a $20 price tag, while Master Splinter's skin is locked behind a $10 Battlepass Premium Track. Purchasing all five would set players back a whopping $100, not including the additional $10 for a TMNT-themed weapon blueprint.
The dissatisfaction among fans is amplified by the fact that Black Ops 6 is a paid game, retailing at $69.99. Players are questioning the value, especially when compared to similar offerings in free-to-play games like Fortnite. As Reddit user neverclaimsurv pointed out, "That is INSANE. In Fortnite, I think I paid $25.00 for all 4 turtles, and that’s a free game."
Moreover, there's concern that these skins won't carry over to future Black Ops titles, rendering them a short-term investment. Reddit user SellMeYourSirin noted, "It has everything to do with the fact a full price game (that’s likely gonna be replaced within the next year) has THREE tiers of battle passes." For context, the game offers a free first tier, with the other two requiring payment.
As the highest-grossing video game in the United States in 2024, it seems unlikely that Activision will scale back on these costly crossover events. However, a shift in strategy could occur if the fan base applies enough pressure.
Black Ops 6 currently holds a 'Mixed' rating on Steam, with only 47% of the 10,696 reviews recommending the game. Players are vocal about several issues, including the high cost of skins, frequent PC crashes, and a surge in hackers disrupting multiplayer games. Additionally, Activision's increasing reliance on AI has drawn criticism.
Steam user LemonRain shared their frustration, stating, "This game has had problems with hard crashing since launch, but the latest update has made it so I can’t complete a single match. Reinstalling. Safe mode. Support. Nothing works and I have given up."
Despite some players avoiding crashes, they still encounter hackers capable of instantly killing all opponents without even starting a match. One player waited 15 minutes in a lobby only to face hackers.
In a unique form of protest against Activision’s use of AI, some users are employing AI chatbots like ChatGPT to generate their negative reviews. Steam user Rundur explained, "Since Activision can't be bothered hiring real people anymore, I've decided to take advantage of AI myself and ask ChatGPT to write this negative review for me. Enjoy."
Despite these numerous complaints, Black Ops 6 continues to generate significant revenue, largely due to its costly battle passes, which stand out as pricier than those in many other shooter games.
