Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) offers players unprecedented control over their equipment through its transmog system. In a March 1, 2025 developer update, Ubisoft detailed how weapon appearance and statistics can be independently modified. Associate Game Director Julien explained the team's design philosophy behind this flexible customization approach.

The transmog system enables players to preserve preferred weapon stats while altering their visual design. This feature becomes available after constructing a Forge in your Hideout, accessible directly through the inventory interface.

"The Forge serves as your central hub for inventory management," Julien noted. "Beyond transmog, it handles weapon upgrades and dismantling – we'll share more Hideout details in a future update." Players can combine elements from different weapons, mixing blade designs, guards, and handles to create unique hybrid weapons.

Evolution of the Progression System

Following IGN Fan Fest 2025's combat reveal, Ubisoft has now unveiled AC Shadows' comprehensive progression mechanics. Creative Director Charles Benoit previously showcased the game's combat system, with this update focusing on character development.

Julien discussed the challenges of designing progression for dual protagonists: "Feudal Japan's disparate warrior archetypes – shinobi and samurai – required innovative progression design. We aimed to honor martial arts mastery principles for both characters."

Mastery Systems and Character Development

AC Shadows features distinct mastery trees for protagonists Naoe (shinobi) and Yasuke (samurai). These trees enable specialization in specific weapons, combat styles, or character archetypes.

"Mastery trees offer progression depth," Julien explained. "Investing points unlocks both active abilities and passive bonuses for your preferred playstyle." Some abilities remain locked behind Knowledge Ranks, progressed through cultural activities like temple exploration, shrine prayers, Kuji-kiri meditation (Naoe), or kata practice (Yasuke).

Tailoring Your Combat Experience

AC Shadows delivers unprecedented playstyle customization through synergistic perk systems. Equipment perks can modify statistics, introduce status effects, or create unique combat conditions that reward specific tactics.

While Naoe and Yasuke have distinct base archetypes, players can develop unexpected specializations. Naoe might focus on devastating ground attacks with rapid engagement capabilities, while Yasuke could specialize in stealth archery despite his samurai roots. The game's versatility encourages creative character builds.

With these extensive systems revealed in the final pre-launch phase, anticipation continues building for AC Shadows. The game launches globally on March 20, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
