FromSoftware's latest venture, The Duskbloods, promises an intriguing blend of their signature Soulslike aesthetics with a new twist. Set to be an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, this game introduces players to the world of the Bloodsworn, but it's not a sequel to Bloodborne as some might speculate. Let's dive into what FromSoftware has in store with The Duskbloods and explore its unique features.

FromSoftware, the creators behind the critically acclaimed Elden Ring, have reassured fans through a recent interview on Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice blog that their commitment to single-player games remains steadfast. This statement comes amidst announcements of their upcoming titles, including The Duskbloods for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Elden Ring Nightreign, both of which incorporate multiplayer elements.
In the Creator’s Voice blog post dated April 4, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director at FromSoftware, clarified the studio's direction. He stated, "As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward." Miyazaki further emphasized their intention to continue developing traditional single-player games, referencing the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring.

Miyazaki shared insights into the thematic core of The Duskbloods, which revolves around the concept of blood. Players assume the role of "Bloodsworn," individuals endowed with superhuman abilities derived from special blood. While drawing parallels to vampires, Miyazaki clarified that the Bloodsworn would not be portrayed as monstrous creatures.
The narrative of The Duskbloods centers on the competition for "The First Blood," a pivotal event known as "The Twilight of Humanity" that unfolds across various times and locales. Miyazaki described the game's settings, which range from Gothic and Victorian-inspired maps to scenes reminiscent of the early modern period, such as a train traversing the landscape.
In The Duskbloods, blood serves as a conceptual element rather than a mere visual of injury. Miyazaki explained, "Blood symbolizes one of the game’s key themes—the history it holds, the power it passes on, the fates it weaves and the marker of those who have surpassed the limitations of their own humanity."

The trailer for The Duskbloods showcased a diverse array of characters, each with unique designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed that players would have the option to choose from over a dozen characters, with some level of customization available. He noted, "I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them."
The game's online multiplayer feature allows up to eight players to engage in PvPvE matches. Players start at a central "hub" where they can select and customize their characters before entering the multiplayer arena. Upon completing a match, players return to the hub to claim their rewards, primarily in the form of character customization options.

Matches typically conclude when only one player remains standing, though victory conditions can vary. Players might need to defeat a formidable boss or meet other specific challenges. Miyazaki emphasized the game's design philosophy, stating, "Regardless of whether it’s PvP or PvE, the idea is to provide players with an experience that allows them to learn and hone their skills as they play. We’ve therefore designed the PvE boss encounters to present a tough challenge and a sense of accomplishment upon defeating them."

Additionally, The Duskbloods introduces "roles" that assign special responsibilities and objectives to players. Although details are still being finalized, Miyazaki provided examples such as the "Destined Rivals" role, where players must locate and defeat their rival, and the "Destined Companion" role, where players need to find a partner to form a bond and unlock unique rewards. He elaborated, "Roles can be assigned to any character via blood customization, allowing players to enjoy role-playing in a literal sense and hopefully adding to the drama of these engagements."
The insights shared in Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice blog indicate that FromSoftware has more announcements planned for The Duskbloods. Scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, this game promises to be a compelling addition to FromSoftware's portfolio. Stay tuned for more updates and details on this exciting new title.
