The modder known as 'Dark Space' has ceased all work on his project that recreated the Grand Theft Auto 6 map within Grand Theft Auto 5. This decision came after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two, the owner of Rockstar Games. Dark Space's mod, which was based on leaked coordinate data and official trailer shots of GTA 6, allowed fans to explore a fan-made version of the anticipated game's map. The mod gained significant attention in January, attracting GTA enthusiasts eager to get a taste of what GTA 6 might offer upon its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S this fall.
The situation escalated when Take-Two issued a copyright removal request, leading to a strike notification on Dark Space's YouTube channel. In response, Dark Space removed all download links to his mod and addressed the issue in a video on his channel, suggesting that the accuracy of his map recreation might have been too close to the real thing for Take-Two's comfort. In a follow-up interview with IGN, Dark Space expressed a philosophical acceptance of the takedown, citing Take-Two's history of similar actions against fan projects.
Dark Space speculated that his mod could have spoiled the surprise of GTA 6's map for players, understanding Take-Two's perspective on protecting their years-long effort on the game's world. He confirmed that he will not continue with the project, acknowledging Take-Two's clear stance against its existence. Furthermore, he expressed intentions to avoid future GTA 5 mods related to GTA 6, citing the risks involved.
Concerns have now arisen about the potential targeting of the GTA 6 community mapping project by Take-Two. IGN has reached out to the group for their response.
Take-Two's history of enforcing copyright includes the takedown of the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' YouTube channel, which aimed to port the 2002 game into the 2008 GTA 4 engine. A former Rockstar developer, Obbe Vermeij, defended these actions, stating that such measures are necessary to protect business interests, particularly when mods compete directly with official releases like the Definitive Edition.
As the gaming community awaits the official launch of GTA 6, IGN continues to provide coverage on related developments, including insights from ex-Rockstar developers on potential delays, comments from Take-Two's leadership on the future of GTA Online, and expert analysis on the capabilities of the PS5 Pro in running GTA 6.
