The Marvel Cinematic Universe has revolutionized entertainment with its interconnected films and TV shows forming a cohesive narrative. However, Marvel's video games operate independently, telling standalone stories completely separate from one another. For instance, Insomniac’s Spider-Man series shares no continuity with Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Upcoming titles like Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Marvel's Wolverine, and Marvel’s Blade continue this trend, existing as self-contained experiences.
Yet Disney once envisioned creating a Marvel Gaming Universe (MGU) that would interconnect Marvel's gaming properties just as the MCU unified its cinematic offerings. What derailed this ambitious plan?

The Fourth Curtain podcast recently revealed insights into this shelved initiative through discussions with industry veterans Alexander Seropian and Alex Irvine, both of whom worked on the MGU concept.
Seropian, co-founder of Bungie (creators of Halo and Destiny) and former head of Disney's gaming division, recalled spearheading the MGU proposal before departing Disney in 2012. Irvine, Marvel's longtime narrative designer currently working on Marvel Rivals, provided additional context.
"Early discussions involved creating a unified Marvel gaming universe mirroring the MCU's success," Irvine revealed. "However, the concept never gained traction."
Seropian confirmed the initiative's early demise: "This was my vision during Disney's pre-MCU days, but it ultimately failed to secure corporate backing."
Irvine elaborated on their innovative plans: "We developed exciting concepts integrating alternate reality game elements—creating hubs where players could transition between game worlds while connecting with comics and original content. Unfortunately, budgetary constraints prevented implementation."
The narrative designer attributed the cancellation partly to operational complexities: "As we explored implications concerning comic and film continuity, Disney executives grew hesitant about managing these intricate crossovers."
Had funding materialized, gamers might have experienced Spider-Man crossing paths with Avengers characters or Guardians crew members—perhaps culminating in MCU-style crossover events.
This revelation raises intriguing questions about Insomniac's upcoming Wolverine project—will it share continuity with their Spider-Man universe? Might we see cameos bridging these games?
The MGU now joins gaming's collection of unrealized concepts—though perhaps in some parallel dimension, players enjoy its interconnected superhero adventures.
