In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka introduced players to the Oilwell Basin, a unique vertically structured area, and its dominant creature, the Nu Udra.

The Oilwell Basin stands out with its vertical layout, a departure from the series' typical expansive horizontal locales. "We already had the horizontally broad Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, so we opted for a vertically connected design with the Oilwell Basin. As you descend, the environment becomes increasingly magma-filled and hot," explained Fujioka. He noted that the upper levels are characterized by oil-like swamps, creating a distinct "gradation" throughout the area.

Tokuda added that during the event known as the Plenty, the Oilwell Basin transforms into an underwater volcano ecosystem. "Entering at the middle or lower levels during the Plenty reveals a clear, marine-like environment, drawing from our experience with the Coral Highlands in Monster Hunter World. During Fallow and Inclemency, smoke billows from the Basin, resembling a volcano or hot spring. However, during the Plenty, it shifts to a clear, ocean-like setting, teeming with creatures typical of the ocean floor," Tokuda elaborated.

These unique creatures add to the Basin's distinct ecosystem, which may seem barren but is teeming with life.

Nu Udra, The Black Flame

The apex predator of the Oilwell Basin is the "Black Flame," Nu Udra. This colossal, octopus-like monster is adapted to its harsh environment with a slimy, flammable body. It uses its tentacles to ensnare prey before incinerating them with scorching flames. Alongside Rey Dau, the lightning ruler of Windward Plains, and Uth Duna, the water-wielder of Scarlet Forest, Nu Udra completes a trio of elemental forces with its fire affinity.

Fujioka revealed the inspiration behind Nu Udra's design: "I've always wanted to include a tentacled creature. We took a typically aquatic creature and modified it to create a striking and demonic appearance, adding horn-like elements to its head." The monster's battle music complements its demonic aesthetic, featuring phrases and instruments reminiscent of black magic, according to Tokuda.

Engaging Nu Udra in battle is a formidable challenge due to its array of tentacles and ability to execute both focused and area-of-effect attacks rapidly. It's immune to Flash Bombs, relying on its tentacles to sense its surroundings.

More Monsters In The Basin

Beyond Nu Udra, the Oilwell Basin hosts other menacing creatures. The Ajarakan, a large, scaly, monkey-like monster engulfed in flames, uses martial arts-inspired moves and powerful fists in combat, blending physical strength with fire-based attacks.

Another unique inhabitant is the Rompopolo, a globular monster with a needle-like mouth that emits toxic gases. Its eerie purple color and glowing red eyes evoke the image of a mad scientist, a direct inspiration for its design. Despite its menacing appearance, Rompopolo's drops yield surprisingly "cute" equipment for both the Hunter and their Palico companion.

Additionally, the Gravios from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate makes a return, fitting seamlessly into the Oilwell Basin's volcanic environment. "We chose Gravios because it matches the Basin's setting, adds to the game's progression, and offers a fresh challenge without overlapping with other monsters," Tokuda stated.

With these exciting revelations, anticipation builds for the release of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28th.
