Bungie, the renowned developer behind Destiny and Halo, has officially unveiled the release date for their much-anticipated game, Marathon, during a captivating gameplay reveal showcase. Dive in to discover what awaits in this innovative title and how to participate in the upcoming Closed Alpha Playtest.

On April 13, Bungie introduced the world to the thrilling gameplay of Marathon, their upcoming first-person extraction shooter. Set in the expansive universe of Tau Ceti, this game diverges significantly from its predecessors. Instead of the story-driven, single-player experience of the original Marathon trilogy released between 1994 and 1996, Marathon now pits six teams of three players against each other and AI-controlled adversaries in a battle for loot and extraction.

Despite this shift to multiplayer dynamics, Bungie remains committed to the narrative richness that has defined their games. In a PlayStation.blog post dated April 12, Marathon Narrative Leader Jonathan Goff emphasized the game's focus on experiential storytelling. "The interweaving of narratives, events, and characters in the original trilogy delivered a world of discovery, wonder, and misdirection," Goff stated. He further elaborated, "Our goal with Marathon is not merely to tell a story, but to create a world where stories naturally unfold and evolve."

The gameplay reveal showcased a heavy emphasis on in-game economics, with every item in a player's inventory having a monetary value and clear indicators of what can be extracted from the maps. However, Bungie clarifies that wealth accumulation is just one aspect of the game. Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler, in a recent PC Gamer interview, outlined the vision for the game to act as a "story engine," generating memorable experiences even from failures or unexpected outcomes. "Some of the best survival stories and moments I've had in gaming are actually failures or weird things that have happened," Ziegler noted, highlighting the importance of narrative over mere survival.

Throughout Marathon's development, Bungie has actively collaborated with fans and content creators, integrating their feedback from the game's earliest stages. One significant piece of feedback was regarding the unpredictability of maps, leading to adjustments that ensure a fair and fresh start for all players in each match. This design shift aims to enhance strategic planning and competition for valuable loot.

From April 23 to May 4, Bungie will host a Closed Alpha Playtest for Marathon, exclusively for U.S. and Canadian residents. Participants will have the opportunity to explore four distinct Runners: Blackbird, akin to Destiny 2's Warlock; Void, with tactical invisibility; Locus, equipped with a tactical shield; and Glitch, known for exceptional mobility. The test will include three diverse maps: Perimeter, a woodland setting for five crews, and Dire Marsh, an expansive map for six crews.

To join the Closed Alpha, interested players should visit Marathon's official Discord server, navigate to the alpha-access channel, and use the "/alpha" command. Invitations are not guaranteed, as this is the game's first public outing.
Marathon is slated for release on September 23, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Keep an eye on our updates for the latest news and developments on this exciting new title!
