Civilization 7 Datamine Reveals Atomic Age, Firaxis Excited for Future

by Andrew May 25,2025

Dataminers for *Civilization 7* have uncovered hints of a fourth, yet-to-be-announced Age, sparking excitement among fans. In an interview with IGN, Firaxis, the game's developer, teased potential future expansions. A complete campaign in *Civilization 7* currently spans three Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each Age concludes with an Age Transition, a pivotal moment where players select a new civilization for the upcoming Age, decide on Legacies to carry forward, and witness the evolution of the game world. This unique system marks a significant departure from previous entries in the series.

The Modern Age in *Civilization 7* concludes just before the onset of the Cold War. Lead designer Ed Beach, in his conversation with IGN, confirmed this timeline, detailing how Firaxis chose to end the game at the close of World War 2. "We spent a lot of time looking at the ebbs and flows of history," Beach explained. He highlighted the collaborative effort with senior historian Andrew Johnson, who brought a global perspective to the game's historical timeline. The end of the Antiquity Age coincides with the collapse of major empires worldwide around the 300 to 500 CE period. The transition from the Exploration to Modern Age reflects the challenges faced by established monarchies due to revolutions, such as the French and American Revolutions. The Modern Age wraps up post-World War 2, a pivotal moment in history that allows for significant shifts in gameplay mechanics, including diplomacy, warfare, and unit access.

When questioned about the possibility of adding a fourth Age, executive producer Dennis Shirk remained coy but hinted at exciting future developments. "You can imagine the possibilities with this, honestly," Shirk remarked, emphasizing the potential for new systems, visuals, units, and civilizations tailored to each Age.

Following Shirk's tease, dataminers discovered references to the "Atomic Age" in the game's code, along with mentions of unannounced leaders and civilizations. This aligns well with the game's current ending and Shirk's comments, suggesting a future expansion into the Atomic Age.

In the meantime, Firaxis is actively addressing community feedback to improve *Civilization 7*, which has received a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, expressed confidence that the game's performance would improve over time, citing the "legacy Civ audience" and describing the game's early performance as "very encouraging."
