Following the teaser reveal of the Swarm faction, the developers of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era from Unfrozen Studio have delved deeper into the intricacies of this captivating new castle. The team has shed light on the inspirations fueling the faction’s development, detailing how the "Inferno" evolved into the "Swarm," and vice versa, while also outlining the dramatic events unfolding across the continent of Jadame.
The Swarm faction stands out due to its remarkable adaptability to foes. Some of its creatures boast abilities that scale with the level of the opposing unit—the larger the gap between the Swarm unit and its target, the more devastating the damage. Meanwhile, units like mantises can dynamically select from three abilities each round, offering tactical flexibility. Other creatures, such as worms and locusts, can consume fallen bodies to heal and bolster their strength—a technique that heroes within the faction can also master.
In Olden Era, the traditional demonic menace has been reimagined as an insectoid race, a concept briefly touched upon in Might & Magic 8. The developers have honored the original lore while infusing the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming it from a mere insect colony into a cult devoted to a single, omnipotent ruler. Each member of this faction is a cog in a vast collective consciousness, driven solely by the will of their master.
The gameplay of the Swarm revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, where players gain advantages by solely deploying Swarm units, which synergize to enhance each other's capabilities. Additionally, Swarm troops can summon cocoons, with the health of these cocoons scaling with the army's overall size. Once hatched, the larvae emerge as temporary combatants, providing players with the ability to adapt to shifting battlefield dynamics.
The developers emphasized the Swarm’s aggressive playstyle, where its creatures can feed on corpses for healing and empowerment. The faction's unique abilities, which adapt based on the enemy's strength, encourage direct confrontations and offer players a novel and dynamic combat strategy. This approach not only enriches the gameplay experience but also aligns with the thematic depth of the Swarm's lore in Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era.
