Former Starfield Artist Reveals Reason Graphic Violence Was Cut

Starfield's toned-down violence: A deliberate design choice

Bethesda's Starfield initially planned for significantly more graphic violence, including decapitations and elaborate kill animations, according to a former Bethesda artist, Dennis Mejillones. However, this vision was ultimately scrapped due to technical limitations. The sheer variety of player character suits and helmets presented a considerable challenge in creating realistic and bug-free violent animations. Given Starfield's persistent post-launch technical issues, this decision appears prudent.

Mejillones, who contributed to both Starfield and Fallout 4, highlighted another key factor in the decision: tonal consistency. While Fallout's over-the-top gore often contributes to its comedic effect, this stylistic choice wouldn't align with Starfield's more grounded and realistic sci-fi setting. Although Starfield has incorporated elements from Bethesda's other, more violent titles (such as recent Doom-inspired content), maintaining a consistent tone was prioritized. Exaggerated executions, while potentially thrilling, risked disrupting the game's immersive atmosphere.

The absence of graphic violence also addresses ongoing player feedback regarding the game's realism. Some critics have found certain aspects, like the nightclubs, lacking in the gritty detail found in comparable titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Mass Effect. Adding gratuitous violence might have further exacerbated these concerns, making the game feel less believable. Therefore, Bethesda's decision to temper the gore, despite deviating from the studio's previous shooter trends, seems strategically sound.
