Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has been a significant contributor to player engagement, fostering community interaction and shared experiences. However, Ishizaki believes it would detract from the streamlined, intense gameplay experience they are aiming for in Nightreign.
While the messaging system is absent, other asynchronous features are not only returning but being improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will be significantly enhanced, allowing players to not only witness but also loot the remains of fallen comrades.
FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing intense, varied gameplay with minimal downtime. This is reflected in the game's planned three-day structure and the removal of the messaging system. The goal is a more focused, multiplayer-driven experience compared to the original Elden Ring.
Nightreign's reveal trailer at The Game Awards 2024 targeted a 2025 release, although a precise launch date remains unannounced.
