The original developer of Oblivion now admits that implementing the world-scale leveling system was a misstep. Discover his reflections on the game's evolution and its remarkable success since release.

A key developer from the original Oblivion team acknowledges that incorporating world-scale leveling was an error, even though the remaster retains this feature. In a recent VideoGamer interview, original designer Bruce Nesmith discussed the game's leveling mechanics.
Besides working on the original Oblivion, Nesmith contributed to quest and system design for titles like Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Starfield. He stated that the remaster's refinements to leveling make it more accessible for today's gaming audience.
The original required players to repeatedly level major skills before resting to increase attributes. The remaster adopts Skyrim's approach, granting experience across all skill lines. Nesmith praised Bethesda's decision as a bold improvement.

However, he expressed reservations about keeping the world-scaling feature. This system causes enemies to match the player's level, creating the impression that character progression doesn't provide a meaningful advantage.
He elaborated, "I believe world-level synchronization was an error, evidenced by Skyrim's different approach." Fans have voiced this concern since the 2006 release, leading to community mods addressing the issue. With the remaster maintaining this system, players have again taken measures to modify world-level scaling.

While rumors of an Oblivion remaster circulated, the extent of the development team's commitment to revitalizing this Elder Scrolls classic surprised everyone. Nesmith himself expected merely texture enhancements comparable to Skyrim: Special Edition.
In another VideoGamer discussion, he commended the team's comprehensive approach, stating, "The scale of enhancement is extraordinary. It practically requires a new term beyond 'remaster' to accurately describe the work."

Bethesda indeed dedicated substantial resources to this project, completely rebuilding Tamriel with Unreal Engine 5. This technological leap enabled developers to overcome previous technical constraints, earning community acclaim for the final product's exceptional quality. Game8 awarded Oblivion Remastered a 90/100 score for its passionate recreation of Cyrodiil, masterfully crafted with contemporary development tools. Read our complete evaluation in the article below!
