"Path of Exile 2 Dev Reveals Urgent Updates Amid 'Mostly Negative' Steam Reviews"

by Sarah May 14,2025

Grinding Gear Games, the developers behind Path of Exile 2, have introduced a series of emergency updates in response to widespread backlash over the Dawn of the Hunt expansion. The update, released earlier this month, introduced the new Huntress class and five new ascension classes: the Ritualist, Amazon, Smith of Kitava, Tactician, and Lich, along with significant mechanical overhauls and over a hundred new unique items. However, the community quickly voiced their discontent, criticizing the update for slowing down the game's pace to an unbearable extent, leading to a drop in Steam reviews to 'mostly negative.'

Players have expressed frustration over elongated boss fights, ineffective skills, and overall gameplay that feels punishing with little reward. One highly-rated negative review on Steam encapsulates the community's sentiment, highlighting issues such as slow gameplay, reduced loot drops, and forced combo mechanics that restrict player freedom in building their characters. This dissatisfaction comes despite Path of Exile 2's successful launch, which saw an overwhelming number of players, yet it also brought challenges that have affected even the development of Path of Exile 1.

In response, Grinding Gear Games has rolled out patch 0.2.0e, scheduled for release on April 11, aiming to address the community's concerns. The patch notes detail extensive changes across various aspects of the game, from monster and boss behaviors to player minion mechanics, crafting, and performance improvements.

Path of Exile 2 Update 0.2.0e Patch Notes

Monster Speed Changes

GGG has made adjustments to monster behaviors to reduce player overwhelm. Key changes include removing interrupt events for certain human monsters, altering the Haste Aura modifier, and adjusting the speed and behavior of various monsters across Acts 1, 2, and 3. These modifications aim to provide players with more breathing room during combat.

Act 1

Changes include slower movement for Werewolf Prowlers and Tendril Prowlers after melee actions, reduced life and damage for Hungering Stalkers, and fewer Bloom Serpents and Venomous Crabs. Additionally, adjustments to Cultists and Blood Cretins' behaviors aim to ease combat difficulty.

Act 2

Boulder Ants have been replaced with Risen Maraketh to reduce irritating monster movements, and Faridun's interrupt events have been removed.

Act 3

Adjustments to Diretusk Boar and Antlion Charger behaviors, changes to the Lost City's monster composition, and fixes in Azak Bog and Venom Crypts aim to improve player experience.

Boss Changes

Specific tweaks to bosses like Viper Napuatzi and Uxmal include reducing the intensity of certain attacks and improving visibility in fights, making them less frustrating for players.

Player Minion Changes

Minion revive timers have been adjusted to prevent prolonged downtime, and changes to Bind Spectre and Tame Beast gems enhance player control over their minions.

Other Player Balance

Additional balance changes include expanding the usability of Rally support and fixing bugs related to certain skills and ascendancy abilities.

Crafting Changes

New mods for caster weapons and the introduction of a Blank rune at Renly's shop aim to enhance crafting options and player progression.

Performance Improvements

Optimizations to ground foliage in various areas are intended to improve game performance.

0.2.0E Deployment Timeline

Patch 0.2.0e is set to deploy at 10AM NZT, with further changes planned post-weekend.

Charm Changes

Charm slots on belts will now be granted by implicit mods, and several charms will see improvements to their protective capabilities and overall power.

Stash Tab Affinities

New affinities for various item categories and the ability to store charms in Flask stash tabs are introduced to streamline inventory management.

Atlas Bookmarks

A new bookmark feature allows players to easily navigate their atlas, enhancing the exploration experience.

The question remains whether these changes will be sufficient to address the community's concerns and restore a positive reception for Path of Exile 2. With these updates, GGG aims to improve gameplay and player satisfaction, but only time will tell if these efforts will be enough to turn the tide.
