Keiichiro Toyama, the visionary behind Silent Hill, is crafting a unique horror-action experience with his new game, Slitterhead. This article delves into Toyama's comments about the game's innovative approach and why he describes it as "rough around the edges" while still being fresh and original.
Launching November 8th, Slitterhead, from Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama, promises a thrilling blend of action and horror. Toyama acknowledges the game's potential imperfections, stating in a GameRant interview, "From the very first ‘Silent Hill,’ we have maintained a commitment to freshness and originality, even if it means being a bit rough around the edges... That attitude has remained consistent throughout my works and in ‘Slitterhead.’"
Toyama and his studio, Bokeh Game Studio, have poured their energy into this project, resulting in a raw and experimental game. The influence of Silent Hill, Toyama's 1999 debut that redefined psychological horror, is undeniable. However, his 2008 title, Siren: Blood Curse, was his last horror project before venturing into the Gravity Rush series, making his return to the genre highly anticipated.
The meaning of "rough around the edges" remains unclear. Perhaps the comparison is between the smaller, independent Bokeh Game Studio (with 11-50 employees) and larger AAA developers. However, with industry veterans like Sonic producer Mika Takahashi, Mega Man and Breath of Fire character designer Tatsuya Yoshikawa, and Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka on board, and the game's promising blend of Gravity Rush and Siren mechanics, Slitterhead's originality is undeniable. Only the game's release will reveal whether the "rough edges" are merely experimental quirks or significant issues.
Slitterhead unfolds in the fictional city of Kowlong—a blend of "Kowloon" and "Hong Kong"—a chilling Asian metropolis that blends 1990s nostalgia with supernatural elements inspired by seinen manga like Gantz and Parasyte, according to Toyama and his team in a Game Watch interview.
Players become a "Hyoki," a spirit-like entity possessing different bodies to combat terrifying "Slitterhead" enemies. These are not your typical monsters; they are grotesque, unpredictable, and transform from human to nightmarish forms, blending horror and a touch of the bizarre.
