ESA Launches Initiative for Game Accessibility Features

by Mia May 20,2025

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has launched a groundbreaking initiative at the Game Developers Conference: the Accessible Games Initiative. This initiative introduces a new "tag" system designed to inform consumers about video game accessibility features, making it easier for players with disabilities to find games that meet their needs.

Developed in collaboration with major players in the industry such as Electronic Arts, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, and Ubisoft, and later joined by Amazon, Riot Games, Square Enix, and WB Games, this initiative is set to revolutionize how accessibility information is presented. The ESA will manage the initiative, ensuring a standardized approach across the industry.

The Accessible Games Initiative features a set of 24 specific tags that will be displayed on digital storefronts and product pages, providing detailed information about the accessibility options available in each game. These tags cover a wide range of features, including "clear text," "large and clear subtitles," "narrated menus," "stick inversion," "save anytime," "difficulty levels," and "playable without button holds," among others.

Stanley Pierre-Louis, the ESA's president and CEO, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "Tens of millions of Americans have a disability and often face barriers to experiencing the joy and connection that comes with playing video games. We are immensely proud to announce the Accessible Games Initiative in partnership with industry leaders. This initiative demonstrates how impactful we can be when we work together in our industry-wide pursuit of helping more people experience the power of play."

The rollout of these tags will be gradual, implemented on a company-by-company basis, and initially available only in English. The initiative is not mandatory, but it represents a significant step forward in making video games more accessible to a broader audience. Over time, the ESA plans to expand the tag system, potentially adding more tags or refining existing ones to better serve the gaming community.

This initiative not only enhances the gaming experience for players with disabilities but also showcases the gaming industry's commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. By providing clear and concise information about the accessibility features of games, the ESA and its partners are setting a new standard for the industry, ensuring that more players can enjoy the rich and diverse world of video games.
