The tech experts at Digital Foundry have unveiled the final tech specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside expressing concerns about the impact of the new GameChat feature on system resources. According to Digital Foundry, this feature is causing significant worry among developers due to its resource demands.
During last month's Nintendo Direct, the company introduced the Switch 2's GameChat functionality, which can be activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other play the same or different games and even see one another through a camera. The built-in microphone is designed to be reliable across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is poised to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most successful online venture in recent years.
Digital Foundry notes that Nintendo offers developers a GameChat testing tool that mimics the API latency and L3 cache misses experienced by the real-world GameChat system. This tool allows developers to test the feature's impact without needing live GameChat sessions. The provision of such tools suggests that GameChat could indeed affect game performance, raising questions about whether the feature impacts gameplay when turned on or off. If GameChat resources are allocated within the system's capabilities, it should not make a difference; however, the existence of these tools implies otherwise.
As Digital Foundry states, "We'll be interested to see how GameChat may (or may not) impact game performance as this does seem to be an area of developer concern." The true effect on game performance won't be known until the Switch 2's release on June 5.
Additionally, Digital Foundry has detailed the Switch 2's final tech specs. The Switch 2 reserves 3GB for the Memory System, leaving 9GB available for games. In comparison, the original Switch reserves 0.8GB, with 3.2GB available for games. This means a significant portion of the Switch 2's resources is dedicated to the system rather than games. Like all consoles, the Switch 2's GPU resources are not fully accessible to developers, as some are reserved by the system.

The Switch 2 boasts a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen capable of 1080p (1920x1080) resolution, a substantial upgrade from the original Switch's 6.2-inch screen, the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen, and the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen. It also supports HDR10 and VRR up to 120 Hz, allowing games to reach 120fps under the right conditions.
When docked, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K (3840x2160) resolution at 60fps or 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. These advanced graphics capabilities are powered by a "custom processor made by NVIDIA."
