Why Bethesda Cut Gore and Dismemberment From Starfield

by Liam Feb 21,2025

Bethesda's Starfield initially included plans for visceral gore and dismemberment effects, but these were ultimately scrapped due to technical hurdles. Former character artist Dennis Mejillones, who contributed to Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that integrating these mechanics with the game's diverse spacesuits proved excessively complex.

The intricate details of suit interaction presented significant challenges. Mejillones described the need for realistic helmet removal, flesh detailing beneath the suit, and managing numerous factors like hoses and variable body sizes within the character creator. These elements, he stated, created an unwieldy and complicated system.

While some fans expressed disappointment at the absence of gore and dismemberment—features present in Fallout 4—Mejillones argued that such mechanics are more fitting within Fallout's lighthearted tone. He noted that the over-the-top violence contributes to the game's unique humor.

Starfield, Bethesda's first major single-player RPG in eight years, launched in September 2023 to over 15 million players. IGN's 7/10 review highlighted the game's compelling quests and combat as key strengths despite various challenges.

Recent revelations from another former Bethesda developer underscored the unexpected number of loading screens, particularly noticeable in Neon. Bethesda has since addressed performance issues, enabling 60fps in performance mode, and released the "Shattered Space" expansion in September.
